DATA _what is it goof for...

15 - November - 7 December

Truth is stranger than fiction and we tinker in the abyss ::

Futurescreen02: data terra is the fifth in an annual series of dLuxevents established in
Sydney, Australia to explore the cross pollination of new media practices, cultural theory
and the emerging developments in science and technology. In 2001, the political climate
was embraced via the trading of Tactical Media with T\LT and continues in 2002 with
data terraŠ

Take 5_ meta earth: the data paradigm

The uptake of digital technologies in recent years has been nothing short of phenomenal. From cracking the human genome to mapping the melting of the polar caps, these tools offer unprecedented scope. The acceleration is but a mere whisper of the emerging data mist, and exactly what will pan out over the coming decades is, at present invisibleŠ

Let us remember our recent past; we have witnessed the cataclysmic future-

Digital technologies offers the means to engage complexly in real time across space. As the digital oeuvre evidences, the evolution of data is not limited to mediation, manipulation, de/ construction, mis/ communication, fragmentation, re / combination, cluster, analysis, search, archive, dis/order, materialisation and transformation. While the applications for data are not limited in scope, it is important to remember, data by its very nature is not knowledge. Would anyone care to hack a code for care, crack a code for consistency, map a novel strategy for interdependance, patch a hope?

Trade on the upshots of media realities

fS02: data terra, delves into the use, manipulation and mis/representation of information in relation to the tools of the trade at the turn of the 21st Century. data[information] terra[earth] mediates across the technological, political, cultural, emotional, psychological and spiritual terrain to elicit the data ambivalence. Via five discrete events;

Desert Rain by Blast Theory (U.K) - a virtual reality game/installation, Desert Rain offers a disconcerting engagement with understandings of warfare in today's mediatised world.

The All Star Data Mappers - curated by John Tonkin is an inter/national survey of artists, designers and scientists who build information visualisation software to navigate the complex terrain of the electronic datasphere.

Data Conspiracy - an informal evening of data swapping, a live debate with Dr Ann Finnegan, Dr Martin Ng and Kate Richards

Interalia - An osmotic over drive of image, sound and text resonating for one night as an oscillating narrative with local audio/visual and performance artists.

Terra Texts - three essays in response to the data terra thematic; The War on Terra by Sean Cubitt, teacher, writer and web poet based at the University of Waikato, Data-lobster: Double Articulation in the Symbiotosphere by free agent Dr Ann Finnegan and Deception in Cyberspace by Bill Hutchinson Associate Professor, Information and Computer Security programmes Edith Cowan University and Matthew Warren Associate Professor, Computing & Mathematics, Deakin University.
